Manager, Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering Manager will manage a group of Mechanical Engineers within Redwire’s Space Missions business unit. You will guide Mechanical Engineers that support design, FEM/FEA, development, fabrication, and testing of multiple space vehicles and subsystems. You will advise and support proposals for new spacecraft designs and development of sub-assemblies that comply with diverse launch and mission requirements. Work in this group includes include system-level architecture definition for compliance with mission requirements including a wide variety of operational dynamics and orbital environments. You will be responsible for assessing the sufficiency of the mechanical engineering staff for skill sets and available time for completing existing programs and near-term growth needs.
As a Mechanical Engineering Manager, you will direct engineers in implementing design process and rules for consistent quality results across the Space Missions business unit. Applying to the position would benefit from having past full product life-cycle experience. A candidate applying would also benefit from having past experience working with an integrated product team in designing electromechanical devices as well as electronic packaging of electronics with attention to thermal control, radiation shielding, and EMI/EMC shielding. This position will report to the Chief Engineer for Space Missions and will be primarily on-site in our office in San Jose, CA with occasional remote work.
Roles and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Technical leadership of engineers working on multiple programs
- Expert customer communications/interface
- Providing project and technical oversight for structural, thermal, and electro-mechanical systems and sub system design and fabrication follow-up activities performed by the group
- Strategic hiring and employee skills development, labor forecasting and resource assignment through close collaboration with program management, guidance and advisory support for career development, staffing, and balancing employee needs with business goals
- Facilitate knowledge sharing and mentoring
- Technical risk assessment and mitigation as pertains to mechanical development of space sensors
- Support at design reviews
- Guiding and performing drawing reviews and production
- Maintain and ensure application of design processes and guidelines used by the department
- Develop proposal inputs and review proposal content for both internal and external customers
- Lead or support department initiatives, recruiting, technology roadmap creation, cross-campus/sector involvement, and NCTA project leadership
Ideal Experience:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline plus 10+ years of engineering experience or Master of Science Degree in a STEM discipline plus 8 years of engineering experience or Ph.D. in a STEM discipline with 5 years of engineering experience
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary spacecraft design teams
- Experience with mechanical design and analysis tools as well as production methods and systems
- Experience with GD&T and best methods for reducing risks in production quality and assembly processes
- Technical or Integrated Product Team (IPT) Team Leadership skills
- Experience applying NASA Space Force design and test standards for margined structures designs such as SMC-S-016, and NASA GSFC-STD-7000B
- Must have active Top Secret clearance or ability to obtain Top Secret clearance
- US Citizenship is required
- Must be able to travel up to 20%
Desired Skills:
- Experience with use of FEM/FEA tools for structural analysis for evaluation of spacecraft launch vibration and shock survival
- Demonstrated technical leadership of mechanical design teams
- Excellent verbal, organizational, and written communication skills are required
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment where multiple projects are being developed and deployed simultaneously
- Experience supporting, performing, or guiding the generation of Craig-Bampton modeling for coupled loads analysis
- Experience with program management, functional management, and/or customer management
- Experience with honeycomb structures and composite structures
